Dogs and cats that once had euthanasia as their fate are now getting a new lease on life thanks to the rescue efforts of Best Friends. Best Friends Animal Society is Pet Adoption and Spay/Neuter no kill center that moved into the Mission Hills City Shelter in the early part of 2012. Mission Hills is a small town north in the San Fernando Valley, north of Hollywood, California. With a slow economy, the city was never able to use the building for its intended purpose.
In a win-win situation for all, the city leased the building and facilities to Best Friends. It was then that Best Friends went to work and started rescuing dogs and cats from surrounding city shelters. The dedicated staff of dedicated volunteers spends tireless hours taking care of these animals. The shelter at any one time can house a population of 150 animals.
When asked why some of these dogs were so well- behaved one of the volunteers said that people are not the only ones that have been affected by the slow recovering economy. As families have lost their jobs and homes, they have been forced to realize that they can’t provide for their animals and have had no choice but to turn them animals over to city shelters.
On weekends, the volunteers pack up some of the dogs and cats and set up outside local area Petco’s and Unleashed by Petco. These dogs shower visitors to the store with their charming and energetic personalities. If you get close enough to them, you get a face full of wet kisses.
With the help of Best Friends and a dedicated staff of volunteers, dogs and cats are once again finding their furever homes.
